Scholarships and Awards at Tennessee Tech
The Department of Mathematics also offers a few scholarships and
awards to undergraduate and graduate students. To inquire about

- The Leonard Dunavin Mathematics Scholarship is awarded
each
year
to an incoming freshman from the
Upper
Cumberland area who plans to major in mathematics. This scholarship was
established in April 1992 by a donation from Mrs. Dolores Nichols in
honor
of her father, Leonard Dunavin.

- Former TTU President, Dr. Angleo Volpe, and his wife
Jennette established the Angelo and
Jennette Volpe Scholarship to
support an incoming freshman majoring in a field of study in the
College of Arts and Sciences. The Math department has been
allowed to award the Volpe Scholarship to an incoming mathematics major
with financial need, and an ACT math score of at least 24. The
determination of student's
financial
need is made based upon the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA).

- The Dr. and Mrs. S. A. Patil Scholarship is awarded
for
an
academic year to a T.T.U. mathematics major who has successfully
completed
or is enrolled in MATH 3400. The purpose of this scholarship is to
encourage talented students to pursue studies in advanced mathematics. Students
transferring from two-year colleges are encouraged to apply for this
scholarship.

- The CSEM
Scholarships
provide up to $1250 per semester to U.S. citizens or permanent resident
aliens who demonstrate financial need according to the federal
guidelines.
Recipients must be academically talented and pursuing a B.S. or M.S.
degree
full time and be reasonably expected to complete the degree within

regular semesters.

Dolzycki Memorial Scholarship is available to graduate

- An Achievement in Independent
Learning Award was given to Bennie Hodges - 2006 - 2007 in recognition of his independent
progress on his master's thesis - Application of Category Theory to
Basic Principles of Automata Theory.
- The R. H. Moorman Memorial Award is presented annually to
the junior
mathematics major with the highest overall QPA at the end of the
fall
semester of the academic year in which the award is made. The award was
established in memory of the late Dr. R.H. Moorman, former chairman and
faculty member in the Department of Mathematics.

- The S. A. Patil Mathematics Award is one of the oldest
awards
at
Tennessee Tech having been awarded continuously since 1919. It was
established
by Judge Oscar Holladay and then continued to be supported by the
Holladay
family. Recently it was renamed the "S. A.Patil Mathematics Award" with
Dr. S. A. Patil providing a gold medal. Dr. Patil is a Professor
Emeritus
in the Department of Mathematics at TTU. A 10K gold pendant is
presented
annually to the graduating mathematics senior with the highest
grade
point average in all mathematics courses taken.

- The Grateful Heart Mathematics Scholarship (awarded for
the
first
time for the 2002/2003 academic year) Any student who meets the
following
criteria will be eligible to receive a scholarship through The Grateful
Heart Mathematics Scholarship Endowment: (1) The recipient must be a
current
student in good standing in accordance with current institutional
policies;
(2) The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in
Tennessee Tech as a mathematics major; (3) The recipient must have
successfully
completed MATH 3400; (4) The recipient may retain the scholarship
after
initial award provided he/she is making satisfactory progress toward
the
degree. Furthermore, scholarship recipients shall be selected in
accordance
with departmental procedures in effect at the time of the award.
Preference
shall be given to eligible candidates from the Upper Cumberland area.

2004-2005 academic year) The recipient must: (a) be a current student

good standing in accordance with current institutional policies; (b) be
a full-time student enrolled as mathematics major; (c) have
successfully
completed or be enrolled in MATH 3400 (or its equivalent);
(c)
have and continue to maintain a QPA of at least 3.6; (d) demonstrate a
commitment to the field of mathematics and show promise of being a
successful
mathematics major as subjectively determined by the faculty of the
Department
of Mathematics.
