Admission to the Graduate Mathematics Program at Tennessee Tech

Instructions for Submitting Application Materials

To apply for admission to our M.S. Program in Mathematics, please follow the guidelines below. For detailed information about our program, please read our  Graduate Student Handbook

All forms needed to complete your applications for admission, for an assistantship, and for housing are provided below.

Please note that the university code for reporting GRE and TOEFL scores is 1804.  The Department expects minimum GRE score for the quantitative and verbal parts to be 1000, and the minimum score on the Analytical Writing part to be 2.5. Students from non-English-speaking countries must submit a satisfactory score of at least 525 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Academic Background

The preferred academic background for applicants to our Graduate Program is a B.S. or a B.A. degree in mathematics.  However, students whose formal education has not been mathematics but in a related field, are also encouraged to apply.*  We have had several students with an undergraduate degree in engineering successfully complete our MS program.  In addition, international students currently pursuing a five year program that leads to a master's degree in mathematics, computer science, physics, or engineering who have completed at least four years in such a program, can be admitted if their mathematics background is strong.  The normal course of study and support in the form of an assistantship is four semesters. For more admission information please consult our Graduate Student Handbook.

Additional Financial Support

In addition to the graduate assistantships offered by the Mathematics Department, the University now offers Diversity Fellowships.

All forms necessary to apply to our Graduate Program can be found at this link.

There is an additional form that we require and it is as follows:

_______
* Students who do not hold a bachelor degree in mathematics or who have not completed an equivalent of four years of university studies in mathematics, may be admitted conditionally. They will then be required to complete certain undergraduate courses in mathematics, typically MATH 5110/5120 Advanced Calculus I and/or II, and/or MATH 3510/3520 Modern Algebra I and/or II, and/or MATH 3400 Introduction to Concepts of Mathematics (to see course descriptions go to http://www.math.tntech.edu/course_descript.html), depending on their background, before they can be reclassified to full standing. Please contact Dr. Allan Mills, Chair, at amills@tntech.edu if you have any questions related to your background and its suitability for admission to our Graduate program.
